Chapter 12

The next morning a policeman arrived at the Black Rock Roadhouse and walked over to where Simon and the Duo were eating breakfast. He appeared to be fresh out of the police academy.

“So, did the birds do it?” remarked the policeman to Simon.

Simon’s jaw dropped. Nobody was sure what to say. Steve looked at Nora and raised his eyebrows.

“Hi, I’m Constable Kyle Kent,” stated the policeman. “I’m a big Hitchcock fan. Sorry, that was probably in poor taste. I’m a bit nervous. This is my first ‘death by misadventure’ investigation.”

Nora was not amused with the young constable’s flippant attitude. Despite his youthful appearance at least he seemed keen to help. They needed to start somewhere.

“Nobody else at the police station seemed to be interested in coming out all this way to molly coddle a bunch of birders who had a mishap,” he explained. “And the footy final is on tonight. Nobody wanted to miss the game so I drew the short straw.”

“I’m sure if we all work together we can get through this,” groaned Steve slowly as if the words pained him. Steve was sullen as he spoke to the policeman, his face contorted into a scowl.

“Is there something wrong?” asked Kyle. He checked his body odour.

“Don’t worry, it’s not you,” said Nora.

“He’s got dental issues,” replied Simon.

Steve looked as sour as a lemon tasted. He needed more painkillers so he popped a few more pills and swilled them down with coffee.

Kyle took out his notebook and asked Simon to explain what had happened the previous day. He underlined the word mishap written in a boyish hand. His pencil broke as he was about to dot the ‘i.’

“These things do happen,” he concluded. “I’ll just get on the radio and …” He was interrupted by shouting coming from the rear of the building.

Kyle turned towards the direction of the noise. “What’s that about?”

“Maybe we should have a look,” suggested Steve turning around.

As they approached the amenities block located at the rear of the building they could see a small group of people standing around holding towels and toiletry bags. Some were wearing terry towelling dressing gowns. Takashi had a towel around his waist and was walking away from the cubicles. He was no longer wearing his neck brace. Steve noticed a rather large dragon tattoo on his back.

“What’s up?” said Steve to Pete who was standing nearby.

Pete pointed at the last cubicle at the end of the building. “Someone’s hogging the shower. Been in there for hours. That’s the problem with unisex amenities. Women take hours to get their faces on in the morning.” Pete rolled his eyes. “I’ve tried knocking but she’s keeping shtum and the door is locked otherwise I’d break it down and give her a piece of my mind.”

“You don’t know it’s a woman. Probably some man on the WC,” retorted Hilda as she stormed off in a huff.

“Leave some hot water for the rest of us,” shouted Pete as he pounded on the door again.
